FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

My pet needs emergency veterinary care and I cannot afford it. Do you provide free services to individuals?

Our programs focus is on international projects that have a community-wide impact. Most of our projects are in areas that have limited or no access to veterinary services. We suggest you contact your local humane society or the United Animal Nations and inquire about their LifeLine Program.

I run a rescue organization in the United States. Can you provide a veterinary team or supplies?

We receive many requests from rescue groups and other organizations that are doing fantastic work all over the United States. As much as we would like to be able to help all of them, our resources are currently focused on international projects in developing countries. The majority of our work is done in areas that have limited or NO access to veterinary care.

How much does it cost to go on a trip with World Vets?

Every trip is different, but they range from $550 to $1550. (Not including airfare).  On occasion, we have trips that are free for veterinarians (independent projects typically).

What does the trip fee cover?

Typically, the trip fee will cover your accommodations, some meals, local transportation, pre-trip communication and planning, volunteer kit (scrub top and/or t-shirt, trip info, luggage tag) and all trip coordination. Airfare is NOT included. You will need to arrange your own airfare. For most trips, we coordinate so that everyone arrives to the destination on the same flight if possible.

How do I unsubscribe from my World Vets membership?

World Vets membership renews automatically on an annual basis. If you do not wish to stay subscribed to World Vets, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it prior to the renewal of your membership.

Is it safe in the countries where volunteers travel?

Safety is the number one priority for our groups. We do not plan trips in areas that are at war or have a high threat of terrorist activity. Nevertheless, there is usually more risk involved in traveling abroad then staying home and watching the travel channel in your living room. We make every effort to make your trip safe, but ultimately you are responsible for your own actions. If the U.S. State Department issues a significant travel warning for an area where a trip is planned, we may cancel or postpone the trip. You can find up to date travel safety information on the U.S. State Department website at http://www.travel.state.gov.

Why should I pay to volunteer?

You are not actually paying to volunteer. You are paying for your travel expenses. The fee usually covers accommodations, local transportation, some meals, project cost, volunteers kits, etc. The money you pay enables us to provide you with all the support and services needed to provide you with a positive volunteer experience. You will be working in places where you are genuinely needed and doing meaningful work for the local communities. A portion of your volunteer fees may also be used to provide veterinary supplies and donations needed to keep the projects running in the country where your project takes place. In addition, for many of our trips we provide exceptionally nice, if not luxury accommodations. Any funding that our organization comes by is used strictly for the purpose of implementing and sustaining our veterinary aid projects and not for providing beachfront accommodations.

What should I bring on my trip?

We recommend that you pack your belongings in a travel backpack rather than a suitcase. If it is small enough to take as a carry-on that is even better. We don't have restrictions on how much you bring but be aware that you are responsible for carrying it and some hopper flights have more strict baggage restrictions than major airlines. Helpful items to bring include bug spray, sunscreen and a camera. In most cases you will not need a sleeping bag (we will inform you if you do). As your trip gets closer, we will give you a more specific list. DO NOT bring illegal drugs of any kind! Drug use is strictly forbidden.

Will there be phone or internet access available on the trip?

Most locations will have internet access at some point during your trip. Access to phones may be more limited. If there is phone or internet access available you are welcome to use it (at your own expense).  AT&T wireless customers often have reception in the areas where we work (although you should check the rates before you go).

How old do I have to be to volunteer on an international project?

As a general rule you must be at least 18. In some cases, volunteers as young as 14 may participate if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Do I need to get special vaccines to participate?

It is your responsibility to get the appropriate vaccines. Please check with your doctor or local health department for recommendations for each particular location. You usually need to get your vaccines several weeks and sometimes months prior to travel so please plan ahead.

Do I need a passport or visa?

You will definitely need a passport. Only some countries require a visa. It is your responsibility to make sure you have the appropriate travel documents. If you do not have a passport, be aware that it can take weeks to months to receive one after your application is filed. Please plan ahead. Trip fees are non-refundable so be sure you have your passport in time.

How much cash should I bring?

In most areas we travel, there will be access to an ATM where you can withdraw local currency.  It is recommended to bring at least $200, in smaller bills (no bigger than $20's)

Can I bring a spouse or friend?

Yes, we welcome spouses and/or friends to come along on the trip when space allows. The trip fee is the same for each person. We require that all participants help with the project.

Can I stay somewhere other than the planned accommodations for the group?

Yes, but we don't recommend it. The trip fee is the same even if you get your own accommodations elsewhere. If you are staying away from the group you may also be responsible for your own local transportation.

Are my trip expenses tax deductible?

The trip fee is usually not considered a tax-deductible donation since you are getting something in return. However, you may be able to claim a tax deduction for all of your travel expenses. Please consult with your tax advisor.

Do I need experience to volunteer?

No.  Our "assistant" positions require no prior experience, just a willingness to learn!  Other positions require veterinary experience.

Can I get college credit for volunteering on a project?

In some cases, yes.  It depends on your school.  You would need to inquire and set up the details.  We will sign off on appropriate paperwork and evaluations after successful completion of the program.

Can I get letters of recommendation for veterinary school?

Many of our Pre-Vet students have received letters of recommendation from the veterinarians they work with on the trip.  It is up to each student to ask and up to each veterinarian to decide.   Most veterinarians are happy to provide a letter of support to students who show promise and have a good attitude during the project.

I have a big group of friends or colleagues who would all like to volunteer on the same trip.  What is the best way to go about this?

If you have enough people for an entire team (vets, techs, students assistants) please inquire about a custom trip.   For smaller groups, our best advice is to sign up early and together as most trips are filled first come first serve (and most fill quickly!).

I am a veterinarian.  Do I need a current license in order to volunteer?

In most cases, yes.   Many of the countries where we work require temporary veterinary licenses.  We take care of all of the paperwork and fees in most cases. If you do not have a current license, please inquire.
